Associate builds community in and beyond the workplace

Angus MacLeod, senior SOX accountant at Bread Financial®, has always sought out community. Whether volunteering, playing in rec sports leagues or showing up for family and colleagues, community plays a central role in how he spends his time. It's also what led him to Bread Financial. Three years in, he still spends most work days in conversation rather than behind a spreadsheet — and that’s exactly how he likes it.

After earning his degree in accounting, Angus explored different career paths to find the right professional fit. His previous role felt isolating, and he knew he wanted work that was both rigorous and grounded in strong relationships. He found that at Bread Financial in 2022.

Today, Angus reviews Bread Financial’s risk and control frameworks to help ensure accuracy and compliance, but the work is far more collaborative than most people realize.

“I think people hear accountant, and they think I just do entries and sit behind a desk all day,” said Angus. “I spend most of my time talking with people from across the business, and since I’m an extroverted person, I found the right job in the accounting field for me.”

He values how his team pushes each other to think more deeply, often using the “5 Whys” method. By asking, “why?” repeatedly, the team works to better understand the root cause of the challenges they're tasked with solving.

“The exercise is really helpful in terms of positioning and re-centering yourself,” said Angus. “I'm a big practicer of yoga, and asking these questions is like when you're doing your breath work and are just there with your thoughts.”

He also brings his team together by organizing quarterly volunteer opportunities and encouraging participation in initiatives like Pay It Forward Week. It’s a commitment that extends beyond the office, as he volunteers in his community at least twice a month and is a regular participant in Pelotonia each year.

“My twin sister was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer when we were 22,” said Angus. “She’s healthy now, but you’re just one diagnosis away from having your whole life change, so I think it’s important to give back while you can. To know that someone is getting what they need, or at least getting some assistance, just makes me very happy.”

Outside of work, Angus continues to prioritize connection. He plays in an LGBTQ+ sports league, makes time to stay active at the gym and spends time with his family and fiancé.

“The Stonewall sports league is a welcoming league to create a space for sports, for people who maybe had been excluded or hadn't felt confident enough to do sports in their youth,” said Angus. “So it's not about ability, it's all about inclusion.”

He brings that same sense of inclusion in his role planning Bread Financial’s 2026 Pride Month celebration with a sports-focused theme.

“If you had told me at 15 years old that I would be celebrating Pride Month in this way at work, I would have laughed because companies just were not engaging like that when we were younger,” said Angus. “It's still relatively recent and exciting to see that companies are engaging.”

Angus's Bread Financial story goes beyond the work itself. It’s about the opportunity to grow, contribute and build meaningful relationships along the way.

“Bread Financial is definitely one of the best places I've ever worked,” said Angus. “The trust in associates, the emphasis on teamwork and the ability to pursue my passions out of the workplace is unmatched. The associates here are just genuinely nice and truly care about you.”
